Almost half a million US Jobs have been lost to offshore outsourcing.(http://www.techsunite.org/news/tech/030917_sfprotest.cfm).
Offshore workers are willing to work for significantly less, than the average Amercian Worker. One person said “for peanuts or beans”.
This point has been brought home by a Doonesbury Article where a worker goes to his job and finds out that the office has been closed out and for sale. He then calls his former boss who is on a beach somewhere and tells the worker what he has done and refers him to his secretary in India.
US companies have been looking to to outsource to reduce facilities costs as well as job costs.
However, this is not a concept that is a new trend. Companies have been moving their companies from high priced cities to the south as early as the 1960’s in order to reduce costs domestically.
Workers had recently organized a protest in from out an outsourcing conference in San Francisco. The article sighted that the access to US Visas increasing has contributed signigicantly to this trend.
So what can US workers do to prevent their jobs from going offshore? Workers may have to eat humble pie for a bit longer by not expecting raises for a while, and take some training courses. Study and work abroad for serveral months. This will not only increase their expose to International Issues, but it can also serve in the future should any job opportunities require travelling and communication overseas.
