Web Worker Daily

What a great way to end National Caregiving Month. Grandma and I are featured on Web Worker Daily’s “From the Field” segment. Check out the tools I use to balance web consulting and eldercare.

For more on my take of eldercare, take a look at Mama’s Keeper.

Making the most out of leftovers

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Right now everyone in the USA is tired of hearing about how to stretch and spin those Thanksgiving leftovers into something yummy. I, on the other had am always looking for the lessons behind each new project I take on.

Most of the time, there are 1 or 2 takeaways from each project that one can put into the “toolbag”. Whether is a new line of code, a new method, or a new technique, there is always something to harvest when plowing through the digital landscape.

What’s up with IE6 being Buggy with Blogs?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Instead of dreaming of turkey, ham and all the trappings of a southern style Thanksgiving, I’m trying to get all the bugs out. Nobody likes finding a bug in their food or in their websites.

Bug in Code

I am also singing the blues, the browser compatibility blues. One client said yesterday that their sidebar is showing more than in should. Another said that their sidebar is not aligning properly, and finally a prospective client whose site I have never touched is saying that their blog content does not appear immediately above the fold in IE. Then, I knew this was not all my doing.

No matter how many screenshots I send, the story is that most of the planet is still on IE6. and if the clients can’t see it, how do I expect everyone else to?

Right now, I am resorted to to creating separate stylesheet for IE6. If anyone has any experience or advice, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Domain Diet

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Many people are bracing themselves for the drama of the holiday season and tackling gaining and losing weight. However due to current circumstances, I have been forced to go on a domain diet.

I have been collecting domains like fashionistas collect shoes. Also in my defense, not all of the domains are mine, as some actually belong to clients. Its just that whenever I have a great idea, I buy the domain. Sometimes I actually do something with the domain, otherwise, I let it sit and redirect and then forget until its time for the renewal.

So, if I have a idea for a domain, I can’t just simply buy it anymore. I have to run it by my marketing director and my chairperson.

How have I been combating my domain diet (or rehab as some of my friends call it)?

1. Setting up subdomains. e.g. “name.companyname.com”;

2. Taking a look at my domains quarterly and figure out what to let expire and what to consolidate. I got a domain year ago, intending for it to be a stand alone site, but noticed I wasn’t blogging on it as often as I should, so I decided to create a category in my blog and have that domain redirect to that category.

3. Looking into auctioning off a domain or two. I haven’t had much experience in this believe it or not, so if anyone has any tips or suggestions for best practices, please let me know.

I will keep you posted via the blog to track my progress.

Being specific makes a difference online

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

I was charged with ordering flowers for a family member who was recently in the hospital. I first went to my local florist to look around to get an idea as to what I wanted to send. I asked about delivery and it was way over budget.

I then decided to go online, I typed the zip code of my family member, then the service that I wanted. In this case “q=114xx flowers.”

I was shown many florist sites in the area. I clicked on them, and they only stated that the served broad communities of Queens. As anyone familiar with Queens knows, Queens is made up of a lot of neighborhood and communities, so saying “We serve Queens!” is not enough.

I went though 3 florists websites before finding the one that served the specific Queens neighborhood I wanted the flowers to be delivered to. I also gave feedback to that specific florist that having that neighborhood listed on their website made me want to make the call.

Praying for Rain

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

I know most of the country is praying for rain in Georgia, but I have been praying for rain in another way for a while. I found the rain in my local library in the form of the book, Secrets of Great Rainmakers: The Keys to Success and Wealth by Jeffrey J. Fox. I have read the book all week in preparation for a networking event. The tips from the book coupled with the Pitchgirl’s pep talk, I’d made valuable connections.

Using a registry to get holiday gifts

Monday, November 12th, 2007

Holiday Gifts

On Good Morning America this morning, on a new segment the have called “The Breakfast Club”, they discussed should people use registries instead of just giving. One of the women said that it was tacky to look at someone’s list and then get the gift. “The spirit of the giving would be compromised.”

I said nearly a year ago, that one does not have to get married, have a baby or have a major birthday to have a registry.

Ultimately, it depends on the person. You can’t tell anyone what to get you for the holidays, but if they’re stumped, at least there’s something to casually point them to.
