Welcome to another installment of Ask nextSTEPH.
Today’s questions comes through a reader via my Squidoo lens.
I am looking for direction on how to track visitors that have added my site to their favorites list. Or get html for a popup window that opens after visitors add my site to their favorites list. ” —Danielle
The first step, if you haven’t already done so is to get website traffic software. Google Analytics provides free web based software that you can track where people are coming from.
There is no specific way to track “who” as in a name or email address is visiting. If so that would be a breach of privacy. Typically in the referring sources, if the source is “/”, you can be assured that people are typing it in or already have it as a bookmark on their browsers.
However, with social bookmarking (adding bookmarks to a web account that you can share with others) sites such as del.icio.us and digg, there is a way to monitor these as well. Just visit the social bookmarking website of choice and type in your domain name (without the extension, e.g. “.com”) to see how many times people have bookmarked your website.
As for the pop-up, I don’t know about having a pop-up after people have added you to their favorites list, but why not try a pop-up when people leave the website, with a feedback form or an invitation to join a mailing list? Offer then 5 to 10% off their next order. That would encourage them to come back.
Ask nextSTEPH by submitting your website and blogging questions via the comments. One question will be selected to be featured. The person who asked the question will also receive a giftcard for a cup of Starbucks coffee.
