Leave the cell phone out of reach when networking

no-cell-phone

I recently attended a networking event. I realized that I forgot my cell phone in my jacket pocket. I realized that was the best mistake I could of made. I was able to interact more with folks and get a few leads.

I also realized how most people were using their devices as a safety net. “Oh is that the new model of X?”. I know that you can’t leave your phone out of every networking event, i.e. tech conferences and the like, but if you know that the network is not high tech, then its safe to leave the cell phone out of reach at least for a little while. You just might be surprised at the results.

I totally agree. That way you won’t be tempted to answer it if it rings. That is really rude in my opinion. I think that the people standing right in front of me should take precedent over people on the phone (unless it’s an emergency with a sick relative). People just don’t have the common sense to at least excuse themselves from the conversation if they have to take a call. They’ll just answer the phone and chat (loudly) with the person on the other end of the phone. (okay stepping down off of soapbox now)
