WordPress Multi-Site (formerly WordPress Mu) allows an administrator to create multiple WordPress sites under the same installation. The administrator would activate multi-site functionality, therefore creating a network of sites.

BuddyPress allows you to create a custom community. Think about having your own out of the box social network with the foundation of WordPress.
