Having a domain name is the first step in establishing an online presence. nextSTEPH clients have taken the first step in their online identify by getting a domain name.
This is a quick primer on domain names.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a meaningful and easy-to-remember “handle” for an Internet address. (whatis.com, 8/28/02)
Domains started out as numbers e.g. 255.45.59.176. Not everyone is not going to remember to go to http://255.45.59.176, but they will remember to go to http://www.company.com.
The 255.45.59.176 is an example of an Internet Protocol Address, IP Address for short. The http://www.company.com is an example of Domain Name System (DNS). The domain name system (DNS) is the way that IP Addresses are translated into Domain names.
The structure of a URL
A URL is a Uniform Resource Locator
The example below is a typical web address:
http://www.company.com/html/file1.shtml
http:// – hyper text transfer protocol
www – World Wide Web – can be included or not in the URL
company – The actual name of the domain
.com– Domain type
/html/– the directory or folder
file1.html– The name of the file
The .info and .biz domain launch was delayed due to the 9/11. They allowed for pre-registration on
the grounds that the person owned the trademark for the domain. A site that has the .info domain is http://www.mta.info.
The former site was http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us, which is hard to remember.
